Increased Physical Activity and Exercise is a Goal for Every Adult

Increasing physical activity and exercise is an important goal for all adults.

We hear over and over again how important exercise is in our lives. On a personal level, I take this very seriously. I’m interested in increasing my exercise goals, but I want to do it in a safe way so that I don’t injure myself.

Did you know that there are many things that could be considered exercise? Things that you do in your everyday life. Some examples would be:

• Washing the car

• Mowing the lawn

• Walking the dog

• Washing windows

• Ironing

• Running the vacuum

Exercise is defined as physical activity that requires physical exertion. So if exercise is physical activity than any physical activity that you do on a regular basis can become part of your exercise program.

We have heard over and over again how physical activity has great health benefits. When you think about it, we have so many gadgets, in the age in which we are living, that keep us from being physically active. We have automobiles to take us everywhere we go, escalators and elevators so that we don’t have to exert ourselves to climb stairs, and many forms of entertainment to keep us sitting when we should be up moving around.

Our society has become unhealthy. There is an increase in the instances of type II Diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. All of these conditions can be prevented or reversed with exercise.

According to Health.gov an adult should have a minimum of two and a half hours per week of aerobic exercise at a duration of at least ten minute increments. Adults also need to do some strength training at least twice a week. Examples of doing strength training exercise would be things like heavy gardening that would involve digging with a shovel. You could also lift weights or use resistance bands. There is also the old fashioned way of doing sit-ups and push-ups.

Many people like to use a gym for some of their exercise, but you don’t need a gym membership to be healthy. Make plans to do some heavy gardening each week. Your yard will love you for it. Set up projects each week that will incorporate plenty of physical activity. The thing about exercise is that you be consistent. Do things that you enjoy doing. If you do that, you will be more likely to make physical activity a permanent part of your life.
